Strip planking Finn, arriving to Lagos BoatyardWe began in November the restoration of this beautiful Finn built entirely of wood, using the technique of strip planking.

Her Owner came to us a few months before in order to have us evaluate her actual state, and to see the work that would be needed to restore  the Finn, and an estimate of how much it could cost.

After our answer with the description of the works we would carry out in the Finn to bring her back to her former beauty and good condition, it didn't take long before Pablo chose to bring his Finn to our Boatyard to start the restoration of the olympic wooden boat.

The second week of November the Finn arrived to our Boatyard, and now, at daylight, as the previous inspection of the vessel had taken place in a dark garage, we could check the works we would have to carry out on the Finn.

What looked worst were the cracks between the wood strips of the hull. There was also a problem of delamination in different areas of the deck, that was cold molded, being the area in poorest condition in the stern, against the mirror, where the wood had began to decay. The interior also needed to rasp the varnish to bare wood in 90% of its total surface, and a treatment of the wood in many areas, which was pale dark caused by the oxidation .

Types of wood with low content of essential oils, are vulnerable to stains caused by continued exposure to sun, moist air and rain. Even if the wood is varnished, if the coat is very thin or has defects, moisture leaves its traces.
